Dr Michael FitzPatrick is a consultant gastroenterologist and researcher who practices in Oxford, UK, at the John Radcliffe Hospital and The Manor Hospital.
Dr Michael FitzPatrick works clinically across all areas of gastroenterology, including reflux, heartburn, swallowing problems, coeliac disease, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, bloating, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, anaemia, and rectal bleeding. He is an accredited endoscopist in both gastroscopy (OGD) and colonoscopy.
Dr Michael FitzPatrick has particular specialist interests in coeliac disease, clinical nutrition, and irritable bowel syndrome. He leads the coeliac service at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and is a consultant in the complex nutrition team in Oxford. He is particularly interested in the interplay between nutrition, gut health, and immunology.
Dr FitzPatrick studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, before studying medicine at Barts and the London Medical School in London. He has worked at the John Radcliffe Hospital since 2015. He completed his DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford in 2020, studying the immunology of coeliac disease, intestinal transplantation, and fundamental aspects of innate-like T cell biology.
Dr Michael FitzPatrick is a scientific researcher at the University of Oxford, working in the Translational Gastroenterology & Liver Unit. His research focuses on immunological mechanisms in coeliac disease and other GI conditions. He is a PhD supervisor, teaches at the University of Oxford, is the author of peer-reviewed publications about coeliac disease and immunology in high-impact journals, and has spoken internationally about his research.
Michael FitzPatrick lives in North Oxford with his wife and 3 sons. Outside of work he enjoys photography, cooking, exercise, and travel.

I work hard to provide patient-centred care within my consultations, focusing on clear, thoughtful, and empathetic communication, and shared decision-making with patients about investigations and treatment.
Rapid access
I have regular twice weekly gastroenterology clinics at the Manor Hospital, Oxford. We can often fit in ad hoc consultations at other times, or can arrange evening and weekend telephone or video-call consultations for your convenience.
